HISTORY OF THE KNIFE:

The knife is an ancient tool created by mankind. It was, however, not always used in the kitchen. It began as a defense and hunting tool for primitive humans in the early ages. They were made out of materials such as flint, copper, and bronze. Nowadays, they are crafted from iron for improved functioning and durability.

Although today they are still being used for hunting and even self-defense at times, it is much more popular in the kitchen. Knives have evolved into well-crafted and pricey tools. There are some that collect them as a hobby, in fact! Many different types have been created for different purposes. This website focuses on the ones revolving around its culinary uses.

PARTS OF THE KNIFE:

The knife has two main parts: the handle and the blade. Each of those two parts consists of other parts. It all adds up to the knife having a total of ten parts. Each part, of course, has its own purpose.

The blade of the knife has six parts. They are: the bolster, heel, spine, edge, tip, and point. The bolster aids the knife user to keep his or her hand away from the knife’s edge and also helps keep the knife balanced. It joins the blade and the handle together. The heel is just the part of the knife opposing to the tip. The spine is the part of the knife opposing the edge and the edge is the cutting part of the knife.  The tip is what is used for delicate cutting. Last but not least, the point of the knife s where the edge and spine meet as well as what is used to pierce whatever it is that the knife’s user s cutting.

The handle has four parts. They are: the rivets, scales, the tang and the butt. The purpose of the rivets is to hold the scales and the tang together to form the handle. The scales are the pieces that create the handle. They are typically made of synthetic material or wood. The tang is the section of the blade that extends onto the handle of the knife. Lastly, the butt is just the end of the knife’s handle.
